Let’s continue our journey to discover the climatic “regions” of Italy and new places to visit.
It includes the territory that from Liguria and continuing to the south, overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. The climate is temperate due to the influence of the sea, with mild winters and hot and dry summers.
In Liguria you are spoilt with choice, in addition to the most famous cinque terre Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore there are villages of equal beauty as the colourful Camogli. Not to be missed is the unique fish festival held on the second Sunday of May in which a legendary and gigantic frying pan is used. Also on the Ligurian coast we find Tellaro the village of poets, a place of incredible charm chosen to stay by many artists and writers.
For the most festive, an unmissable event is the Carnival of Viareggio, a long tradition of parades of floats and masks all Italian.
Equally fascinating, but further south, is the legendary Riviera of Ulysses, where it is said that Ulysses could not help but to stop on its beautiful beaches bewitched by the call of the sorceress Circe. In this area you can stop in the town of Gaeta and observe two places of worship very important: the Grotta del Turco and the incredible sanctuary of the Rock split or get lost among the local of the wonderful Sperlonga.
That is the coastal area that overlooks the Adriatic Sea, which is less deep and wide than the Tyrrhenian Sea, exerts a less mitigating action making the temperatures lower than the Tyrrhenian region.
We suggest visiting the Po Delta and the Comacchio Valleys, a vast naturalistic area where water is the main element. Thanks to the humid environment and to the wide plain, not yet excessively urbanized, bird species that are difficult to spot in other areas of Italy find refuge here. Boat trips and birdwatching are just some of the possible to do. in the Salina. Not to be missed is a visit to the Salina di Comacchio to see some wonderful specimens of Pink Flamingo.
Particular and suggestive is the Abruzzo coast of the Trabocchi, which takes its name from the "Trabocchi ", ancient wooden constructions as stilts, land extension on the sea, used for fishing but also for living. Some of them have been restored and today they host restaurants where you can taste Abruzzo specialties and enjoy a breathtaking view.
Further south, in Puglia, we find Vieste, a typical Italian summer resort with its scenic rocky promontory overlooking the sea that divides the Gargano coast in two. We suggest here a boat trip to the caves of Vieste, an authentic marine treasure shaped by the waves over the centuries.
Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia are part of this area. They have a predominantly Mediterranean climate with mild winters and short and long summers, dry and with high temperatures. The rains are scarce and concentrated in the winter season.
Surely autumn and spring are the best seasons to visit these regions, without suffering too much heat.
For lovers of art cities, a visit to the archaeological museum in Reggio Calabria is a must. The museum houses the famous Riace Bronzes, whose history is quite curious. Accidentally found in the waters near the town of Riace Marina dating from the mid-fifth century BC and made in Argos in the Peloponnese. But Reggio Calabria is an open-air archaeological museum, the Greek Walls, the Hypogeum of Piazza Italia and the Roman Baths just to name a few.
Another place of extreme charm is Mount Etna, the most active volcano in the heart of Sicily, since 2013 UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Etna Park you can admire extinct craters, caves used in ancient times as shelters and sacred places and also an extraordinary ice cave known as the "Grotta del Gelo". Numerous trekking or jeep trails are available for the more adventurous.
For fans of industrial mining archaeology Sardinia certainly offers many alternatives. The extraction and processing of minerals here dates back to ancient times. Ancient merchants and conquerors attended the coasts of the island attracted by the richness of the Sardinian subsoil. One among many is the Mine of Montevecchio, a timeless place of extreme charm. Through the stories of a professional guide it will be possible to know from close up the life in the mine and the hard work carried out by thousands of workers.
Each season and time of year offers a unique atmosphere. With a bit of organization it is possible to discover unusual places and delve into Italian history.
